DU student among two die in Bandarban road accident

Two female tourists, including a female student of Dhaka University, were killed and 10 others injured when a tourist jeep (locally known as Chander Gari) plunged into a ditch in Ruma upazila of the hilly district of Bandarban on Saturday.

The deceased were identified as Joynob, 24, a student of Criminology Department of Dhaka University, and Firoja Khatun, 53. 

The injured are – Rafan, 12, Ushasi Nag, 15, Dr. Joba Roy, 45, Tahmina Tanzim Talukder, 19, Tasneem, 21, Rizvi, 34, Anjuman Haque, 35, Swarna, 23, Amena Begum, 60, Itu, 16, and Mahfuza Islam Rupa, 45). 

According to locals, the accident happened when a tourist jeep carrying the tourists fell into a roadside ditch around 11 am in Darjiling Para area on Ruma-Keokradong road as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving two women dead on the spot and injuring 10 others. 

It is learnt that a group of 57 people went to Keokradong on Friday by four cars under the initiative of an organization called 'Narir Chokhey Bishwa'. On Saturday, they were returning to Ruma headquarters from Keokradong, the highest point of Bangladesh.

Ruma Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Syed Mahbubul Haque said from the scene that the army and BGB immediately went on a rescue operation after receiving the news of the accident. 

The injured were rescued from the spot and taken to Ruma Upazila Health Complex. Later they were shifted to Bandarban District Headquarters Hospital.
