DPDT recognises 'Tangail Saree' as GI product

The Department of Patents, Designs, and Trademarks (DPDT) of the Industries Ministry has recognized the 'Tangail Saree' as a Geographical Indication (GI) product of the country. 

The Industries Ministry's senior secretary, Zakia Sultana, made the announcement on Wednesday and said that a gazette notice will be published on Thursday.

In accordance with the rules set forth by the International Property Rights Organization (WIPO), DPDT certifies and recognizes GI products on behalf of the Ministry of Industry.

The Geographical Indication Products (Registration and Protection) Act was passed in 2013.
