Suchona becomes first woman mayor of Cumilla city

Tahsin Bahar Suchona defeated Monirul Hoque Sakku in the Cumilla mayoral by-election by a margin of 21,993 votes.

In the city's Zilla School auditorium on Saturday evening, the unofficial election results were announced by the returning officer Farhad Hossain.

The daughter of Cumilla-6 (Sadar) lawmaker AKM Baha Uddin Bahar, also the president of the Awami League unit in Cumilla city, received 48,890 votes while Sakku, the BNP's expelled leader and two-time mayor, bagged 26, 897 votes.

Some 13,155 votes were cast for BNP leader Nizam Uddin Kaiser, who was also expelled.

Another mayoral candidate, Noor-ur Rahman Mahmud Tanim, got 5,173 votes.

Voters cast their ballots using electronic voting machines (EVMs) from 8:00 am to 4:00pm.
