Fire in the Sundarbans completely under control

A major fire that erupted in the Chandpai range of the Sundarbans East Zone on Saturday afternoon was brought under control, the Fire Service and Civil Defence said on Monday. 

The FSCD DG confirmed the matter at a press briefing at around 10:45 am. He said that a hundred per cent of the fire was brought under control. However, the FSCD will douse any new fire with water. 

He also said that a thick layer of leaves covers the forest floor. Fire could still be present under this layer, so the FSCD will continue applying water for two more days. 

The fire broke out in the Sunderbans at around 4 pm on Saturday (4 May). Noticing smoke, the locals informed the authorities. Since then, coordinated efforts of the Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Forest Guard, and Fire Service as well as local volunteers have succeded in bringing the fire under control.
