Battery-run rickshaw drivers block Mirpur roads to protest ban

In protest of the recent ban on batter-run rickshaws and easy-bikes, drivers of these vehicles have blocked some roads and held demonstrations on Sunday morning. As a result, traffic came to a standstill, causing immense suffering to passengers. 

Confirming the matter, Mirpur Traffic Division Deputy-Commissioner Jasim Uddin said, hundreds of battery-run rickshaw drivers gathered at Mirpur-11, Mirpur-1, Agargaon, and Kalshi area at around 9:30 am and started to protest the ban. They attacked several regular rickshaw drivers in the Kalshi area. They also vandalized several buses at Mirpur-11. Later, they gathered at Mirpur-10 and blocked traffic. 

Police are trying to bring the situation under control, Jasim Uddin said. 

On 15 May, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader directed to take steps to stop plying of battery-run rickshaws and easy-bikes on roads in Dhaka city.
