PM lifts ban on battery-run rickshaws in Dhaka

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has directed to lift the ban of battery-run rickshaws operating in the capital, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has said. 

Quader disclosed the information while speaking at an event in Dhaka on Monday. He said the prime minister gave the direction out of consideration for the low-income people. 

However, the ban on battery-run rickshaw operation on Highways is still in place. 

Previously on 15 May, the minister had directed to take steps to stop the plying of battery-run rickshaws and easy-bikes on roads in Dhaka city. Following his direction, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) started drives against such vehicles. In protest, battery-run rickshaw drivers took to the streets on Sunday.
