Cyclone Remal now lies over Koyra in Khulna

The severe cyclonic storm Remal has already crossed the coast completely and now lies over Koyra in Khulna, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said in a special weather bulletin issued Monday (27 May).

Remal has moved northwards inland and it will weaken into a cyclonic storm within 2-3 hours, the bulletin adds. 

The coastal districts of Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi, Borguna, Barishal, Bhola, Patuakhali and their offshore islands and chars are still under the Great Danger Signal No. Ten (R) Ten. 

Meanwhile, the coastal districts of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Feni, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Chandpur, and their offshore islands and chars are under Great Danger Signal No. Nine (R) Nine. 

Riverports of coastal districts were asked to hoist Riverine Great Danger Signal No Four (R) Four. 

Under the peripheral effect of the cyclone, the coastal districts are likely to be inundated by an 8-12-foot high tidal surge. 

All eight divisions in the country are expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. Landslides may occur at places over the hilly regions. 

The cyclone has battered the coastal districts of Bangladesh with full force. It has broken and uprooted thousands of trees. Shops and homes have been devastated as a result of the severe cyclone. 

Remal caused serious damage in Mongla, Shyamnagar of Satkhira, Kalapara of Patuakhali, Kuakata and Khepupara.
