Travel embargo imposed on Matiur, family members

A Dhaka court on Monday imposed a travel embargo against NBR official Matiur Rahman, his wife Laila Kaniz and their son Ahmed Towfiqur Rahman Arnab. 

Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Mohammad As-Shams Jaglul Hossain passed the order following a petition from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The order was first sent to the police, and will later be sent to all air, land and sea ports of the country. 

Recently, it was found that Matiur Rahman's son bought a goat for Tk 15 lakh for Eid-ul-Azha. It was also found that he spent a total of Tk 70 lakh to buy cows. Afterwards, Matiur Rahman and his family's lavish lifestyle came under scrutiny. 

Following the controversy over his illegal wealth, Matiur, who was the president of the NBR’s Customs, Excise and VAT Appellate Tribunal, has been transferred to the Internal Resources Division (IRD) of the Finance Ministry. He was also removed from the post of director of Sonali Bank Limited.
