Internet service resumes after 5 days

The government has resumed broadband internet service on Tuesday night after it was disconnected for five days following unrest across the country over quota protest movement.

State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Junaid Ahmed Palak said in a press conference at BTRC on Tuesday afternoon that only broadband internet will be reopened experimentally. For now, this service will be available in Dhaka and Chattogram. 

However, even if broadband internet is resumed, social media such as Facebook and YouTube cannot be used, said Palak.

Broadband internet was completely shut down after 9 pm on Thursday last. Earlier on Wednesday, mobile operators stopped 4G services across the country. The operators took the step on the instructions of the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC). Consequently, the entire country faces internet blackout.
