Do not travel to Bangladesh: US issues advisory

The US Department of State on Saturday (July 20) raised the Travel Advisory Level for Bangladesh to Level 4 — ‘Do Not Travel.’

"Do not travel to Bangladesh due to civil unrest, crime, and terrorism," cautions the update posted on the department's official website. 

In the country summary portion, the update reads,"  On July 20, 2024, the Department allowed for the voluntary departure of non-emergency US government employees and family members. Travelers should not travel to Bangladesh due to ongoing civil unrest in Dhaka."  

Explaining the situation in Bangladesh, the update said there may be a delay in provision of routine consular services.

The US state department cautioned travellers to be aware of petty crimes. It said there are no indications foreigners are being targeted because of their nationality and that crimes tend to be situational. However, terrorist attacks can happen with little or no warning. 

Referring to such security concerns, the update says US Embassy personnel in Bangladesh are subject to some movement and travel restrictions. The US government may have limited ability to provide emergency services to US citizens in Bangladesh due to these travel restrictions, a lack of infrastructure, and limited host government emergency response resources.
