Met office issues heavy rain warning amid flood

Bangladesh Meteorological Department(BMD) on Thursday issued an emergency warning for heavy rainfall due to active monsoon mainly in southern regions of the country including the capital and Mymensingh district in the midst of the current flood situation.

"Due to active monsoon, heavy (44-88 mm per 24hrs) to very heavy (>89 mm per 24hrs) rainfall is likely to occur at places over Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions," according to the warning signed by Meteorologist Dr Muhammad Abul Kalam Mallik.

"Due to heavy rainfall, landslides may occur at places over the hilly regions of Chattogram division," it added.

"Light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely to occur at most places over Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barisal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at many places over Rangpur, Rajshahi and Khulna divisions with moderately heavy to very heavy falls at places over the country in the next 24 hours," said the daily BMD weather bulletin issued Thursday morning.

However, the day and night temperatures may remain nearly unchanged over the country.

The country's maximum temperature on Wednesday was recorded at 33.7 degrees Celsius in Tetulia while Thursday's minimum temperature of 24.0 degrees Celsius was recorded jointly in Rangamati and Bandarban.

The maximum rainfall for the last 24 hours was recorded at 188 mm in Cumilla.

The sun sets at 6:26pm on Thursday and rises at 5:37am on Friday in the capital.
