Reporters Without Borders urges fair trial for Farzana Rupa

Reporters Without Borders (RSF), an international press freedom organization, has voiced their concern for Bangladeshi journalist Farzana Rupa in a letter addressed to the interim government's Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus. 

In the letter issued Thursday, RSF said they were particularly concerned for Rupa’s safety and hoped that the Bangladeshi authorities would release her promptly and let her travel. In any case, her right to a fair trial and safety should be fully guaranteed by your government bearing primary responsibility in this regard.

Mentioning the circumstances where Farzana Rupa and her husband were detained while trying to leave the country, RSF said, "We deplore the detention of Mrs Farzana and her husband and hope that your interim government will keep its promises to protect journalists which is its primary responsibility as per its international human rights commitments. We strongly believe it is your government's duty to ensure their right to a fair trial, ensuring that all journalists can produce information

work safely and with complete independence, without fear of legal prosecution."
