Kapati Hydropower Plant to open 16 gates tonight

The Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) will open 16 spillways of the Kaptai Dam at 10:00pm Saturday night.

The authorities took the decision as the water level of Kaptai Lake nears the danger mark, ATM Abduzzaher, the manager of the Kaptai Hydropower Plant told the media in an urgent message at 3:00pm today.

As of 3:00pm on Saturday, the water level of Kaptai Lake was recorded at 107.66 feet, said the statement adding all 16 spillways will be opened to a height of six inches that  to manage the rising water and prevent flooding in both upstream and downstream areas.

It is expected that the move will release 9,000 cubic feet of water per second (CFS).

To keep the five units of the Kaptai Hydropower Plant operational, 32,000 CFS of water is now being discharged, it added.
