All gates of Farakka Barrage opened

India has now opened 109 gates of Farakka Barrage on Monday due to floods in its Bihar and Jharkhand states.

Consequently, 11 lakh cusecs of water will enter Bangladesh in a day.

Due to the opening of the Farakka Barrage, there is a risk of flooding in Bangladesh as well as Murshidabad of West Bengal.

Meanwhile, India has claimed that Bangladesh is being given information regarding the flood situation and landslides in advance.

On Monday, Farakka Barrage authorities said that there is huge water pressure due to floods in two neighbouring states. In Farakka Barrage area, the water is flowing 77.34 meters above the water level. Under the circumstances, the gates were opened.  In that case, the amount of water in the feeder canal has also been increased, the authorities also said.

General Manager of Farakka Barrage Shri RD Deshpande said, “Farakka Barrage authorities are always on alert. Every moment is being monitored. The water pressure built up in a very short period of time and created a huge pressure on the barrage. If all 109 gates of Farakka Barrage were not opened, there was a great risk of damage of the dam. For now, 40,000 cusecs of water has been released in the feeder canal and 11 lakh cusecs in the downstream.”
