US calls for safe working environment for journalists

The US State Department has called for an environment in Bangladesh where journalists can work without fear. At the same time, an impartial legal process should be ensured for journalists in case they face the judicial process.

Washington made this call in view of the arrest and conviction of at least two journalists after the interim government took over.

Ekattor Television's former head of news Shakil Ahmed and chief reporter Farzana Rupa were arrested on 21 August in connection with the murder case of garment worker Fazlul Karim. They were also placed on a 4-day remand the next day. 

When asked about the US State Department's views on the recent situation in Bangladesh, a spokesperson explained their position in a written correspondence. 

After the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government, a large number of people have been accused in hundreds of cases so far. Former ministers, judges, various levels of law enforcement, administration, businessmen, intellectuals, journalists, teachers, players, artists and activists at all levels of the Awami League are among the list of accused. The United States also called for their rights to be upheld in the judicial process.

The spokesperson of the US State Department said, "We welcome the initiative taken by the chief adviser, Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, to stop the recent violence and establish peace. We are heartened that the interim government has prioritized restoring security and the rule of law."

Regarding the law and order situation, he said, we are ready to work with the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. This government is working on a future plan of equality, unity and a democratic future for the people of Bangladesh.

A large population in the southeastern part of the country has recently become affected by floods. Expressing deep condolences to those who lost loved ones and their homes in the floods, the spokesperson highlighted the US's assistance to the flood victims.

He said that USAID provided $2,50,000 through the Red Cross and Red Crescent Society for the rescue and relief operations in the recent floods and for the repair of damaged houses. USAID stands ready to provide additional support if needed.
