Power outages to persist through September

Adviser to the Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan on Wednesday hoped that the present electricity situation would be improved by the next 20 days. 

"Several incidents have occurred together, due to which load shedding has increased. Barapukuria coal-fired power plant shut down suddenly due to technical issues. At the same time, a mechanical fault occurred in one of Rampal's units. This crisis would have been easier to deal with if the gas supply was in place," he said. 

The adviser made the remarks when a delegation of Forum for Energy Reporters Bangladesh (FERB) led by its Chairman Shamim Jahangir paid a call on him at his ministry’s conference room at the Bangladesh secretariat on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Power Division Senior Secretary Md Habibur Rahman said, "Wednesday's power situation improved over Tuesday's. Another pump like the one that broke down at the Barapukuria power plant is being flown in from China. Barapukuria will be operational by Sunday. Initiatives have been taken to speed up the faulty unit of Rampal power plant."
