Blue network to be set up using Dhaka's canals: Rizwana

The government is mulling to build a blue network using Dhaka's canals, said Water Resources Adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan.

She came up with the idea while addressing a workshop at the Forest Department in the capital on Saturday.

Rizwana said the government wants to establish the network through the canals that are still promising to be recovered.

The Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) arranged the workshop.

The title of the workshop was "Spatial and Temporal Changes in Dhaka City's Urban Ecosystem, Landscape and Biodiversity over the Past 100 Years and Formulation of Strategic Action Plan".

Rajdhani Unnayan Kartipakkha (Rajuk) should carry out weekly operations to recover occupied city canals, Rizwana opined.

She voiced warning saying that no misdeed should be legitimated and eviction drives should be intensified if needed.

Rizwana stressed out planting grass in Dhaka's open spaces and linking the population in this effort.

She said urban planning for Dhaka must prioritise greening, biodiversity conservation and wetland conservation.
