US wants to see human rights protected in Bangladesh

The United States wants to see human rights protected in Bangladesh and has also called for holding accountable those responsible for violating human rights in the country in the past few months. 

US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller made the remarks during a press briefing on Monday (local time). 

When asked whether the US government has communicated with the Bangladeshi authority to protect the lives of minorities during the upcoming Durga Puja festivities, Miller said, "... of course, we want to see the rights of minorities protected in Bangladesh as often is as true all around the world."

Mentioning an urgent call from a French-based human rights organization and human rights watch, JMBF, regarding the rising incidents of mob violence and lynching in Bangladesh, a journalist asked how the US government views the protection of human rights in Bangladesh. 

To this question, Miller answered, "So I can’t speak to these individual cases that you mentioned, but I can tell you that the Secretary met with the chief advisor of Bangladesh just two weeks ago at the UN General Assembly in New York... And made clear that we want to see human rights protected, and that ultimately those responsible for violations of the human rights of the Bangladeshi people over the past few months need to be held accountable."
