Tarique Rahman exempted from tax evasion case

A Dhaka court has exempted BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman from a case filed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) for alleged tax evasion.

Judge Rezaul Karim of Dhaka Special Judge Court-10 passed the order on Wednesday.

The verdict was pronounced as the court found the allegations brought against the BNP leader "imaginary and fabricated".

On July 28, 2008, the then deputy commissioner Samia Akter of Dhaka Taxes Zone-6 filed the case for evading taxes of Tk26.86 lakh.

According to the complainant, Tarique had made an income of Tk1.07 crore from different sources from the period of 2002 to 2006 but failed to pay Tk26.86 lakh in taxes against that income.
