UGC to become University Commission: CA press secretary

Chief Adviser's Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam has said the government will make the University Grants Commission (UGC) into the University Commission.

"There is the University Grants Commission. It will be made into the University Commission dropping the word "grants". There will be a big work over it," he told a press briefing at Foreign Service Academy on Wednesday evening.

Mentioning that there are many public and private universities in the country, Alam said the University Commission will be formed to ensure the standard of tertiary education.

He said the University Commission would work to upgrade tertiary education to international standards and expand research works.

To make the school curriculum up-to-date, the press secretary said, textbooks of class IX-X will be rationalised.

He said the government will take measures to provide training to the teachers of non-government schools as they do not get enough scopes of training like the government school teachers.

Alam said the "trade" in the education sector regarding the promotion and transfer of teachers and staff has been identified. "We will work on this issue so that the education sector could be made corruption-free," he added.
