Former BGB DG Mainul Islam returns home

Former Director General of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Mainul Islam, who was detained at Dhaka airport this evening, has returned his residence, said Special Branch Additional IGP Md. Golam Rasul. 

However, Mainul’s wife and children have left for Canada on a scheduled flight, he added. 

Golam Rasul told The Daily Samakal that Mainul is not going abroad now and he has returned his residence. 

“Mainul has been requested not to go abroad for the time being as the commission formed on the BDR mutiny incident has expressed interest in talking to him,” the police official said. 

In this regard, Mainul said, “I was not informed in advance that the commission would talk to me. I was going to Canada today as per the pre-determined schedule. This ticket to Canada was booked on August 1.”

He also said that his wife and children have left for Canada on a scheduled flight.

Earlier on Tuesday evening, the police detained Mainul Islam at the airport.

On February 25, 2009, a total of 74 people, including 57 army officers, were killed in the BDR mutiny and the brutal massacre in Peelkhana. 48 hours later, Mainul Islam took over as the Director General of the force.

After he took over as the Director General, the force's uniform was changed and an intelligence unit was added to the BGB. He was later promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General and made General Staff at the Army Headquarters.

In July 2015, Mainul Islam became the Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division. He retired from the army in February the following year.
