Adv Qamrul, Solaiman Salim sent to jail in Shamim murder case

A Dhaka court has sent to jail former food minister Advocate Qamrul Islam and former Dhaka-7 lawmaker Md Solaiman Salim in a case lodged over the murder of Juba Dal leader Shamim.

Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Ziadur Rahman passed the order as police produced the duo before the court after end of their four-day remand in the case and pleaded to keep them behind the bars. 

The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sharifur Rahman on December 18 placed Qamrul and Solaiman on a four-day remand in the case.

Police, on November 18, arrested Advocate Qamrul from a house in the Uttara Sector-12 area while a team of Chawkbazar Police Station arrested Solaiman Salim from Gulshan area on November 14.

According to the case documents, BNP called a rally in the capital's Naya Paltan area on October 28, 2023. In response to the BNP's rally, the then ruling Awami League (AL) convened a counter rally on the same day in the capital.

The AL men with the support of law enforcing agencies attacked the BNP rally which left Shamim Mollah killed and injured many of its leaders and activists.

The case was filed against 704 people including AL general secretary Obaidul Quader on September 24, 2024.
