DMTCL urges people not to fly sky lanterns near metro rail lines

Dhaka city dwellers have been requested to refrain from flying sky lanterns or similar objects near Metro Rail Line-6 on Thirty-First Night or New Year Eve.

Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) made the request issuing a special circular in this regard on Monday.

The DMTCL authorities said lanterns can get stuck on the power lines overhead of the Metro Rail line, which can cause major accidents.

It warned that the metro rail is being operated using high-voltage power lines.

“If a lantern or similar object is thrown, it can get entangled in the power lines. This poses a risk of serious accidents, loss of life and property,” it added.

The DMTCL authorities uttered warning saying that legal actions will be taken against the responsible individual and organization, if an accident is occurred due to flying sky lanterns or any similar object nearby the metro rail lines.

The metro rail has been transporting around 3.5 lakh passengers on the Uttara-Motijheel route every day, according to the special circular.
