Bangladesh seeks UN assistance in national elections

Bangladesh has sought UN assistance in the 13th parliamentary elections, said UN Resident Coordinator Gwyn Lewis.

She made the statement in response to a question while addressing reporters at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka on Tuesday.

The UN Resident Coordinator said, “The government and political parties will decide when the elections will be held. We do not want to say anything about the time frame. Bangladesh has sought UN assistance; we only want to provide technical and technological assistance in the elections.”

Gwyn Lewis said that the delegation will go to Chattogram on Wednesday to assist in the elections. 

“It will meet with various electoral stakeholders such as political parties, civil society, and experts. The delegation will report back after returning,” she added.

It is worth noting that the organization has directly assisted the commission in all elections held in Bangladesh since 2005. 

The UN provides various types of assistance in the elections of a country, including advice, technical assistance, logistics support and training, preparation of voter lists, and creating public awareness.
