Beximco workers set 5 buses on fire, vandalize over 100 vehicles

Workers of Beximco Industrial Park set five passenger buses on fire and vandalized over 100 vehicles demanding the reopening of a closed factory in Sarab area of Kashimpur Metro Police Station in Gazipur. 

The incident took place on Wednesday afternoon in the Chakrabati Mojar Mill area on Kaliakoir-Nabi Nagar Road, said Industrial Police Senior Assistant Superintendent Md. Abu Taleb.

He said that the workers have blocked the Chandra-Nabi Nagar Highway demanding the reopening of the Beximco Industrial Park factory. The police are trying to get them to leave the highway and normalize traffic by convincing them.

Police, workers and locals said that about 42,000 workers have been protesting inside the factory and on Kaliakoir's Nabi Nagar Road since last December demanding the reopening of 16 closed factories in Beximco Industrial Park.

On Tuesday, workers held a huge rally in the Mazar Mill area and demanded the reopening of the factory. In continuation of that, on Wednesday, workers of Beximco Industrial Park blocked the Chandra Nabi Nagar section of the Dhaka-Tangail highway. 

When contacted on mobile phone, Beximco Industrial Park Public Relations Officer Tariqul Islam expressed regret over the vandalism and arson of public transport vehicles.
