Class, exams halted at DU, students announce Dhaka blockade

All classes and examinations at the University of Dhaka (DU) were suspended on Monday. Meanwhile, students of the seven DU-affiliated colleges announced a Dhaka blockade programme on the same day. 

At around 11pm on Sunday, a clash broke out between students of DU and its seven affiliated colleges at the Nilkhet intersection. Several rounds of chase and counter-chase ensued at the New Market and Nilkhet area. Both parties lobbed brickbats at each other, injuring at least six people.

In light of this situation, DU Proctor Assistant Professor Saifuddin Ahmed told the media that all classes and exams were suspended at DU. On Monday, a meeting with the principals of the seven colleges was called. He hoped that a peaceful resolution could be reached through discussion. 

Meanwhile, students of the seven colleges called for a blockade programme in Dhaka from 9am to 5pm on Monday. 

The programme was announced at a press conference in front of Dhaka College at 3 a.m. on Monday. Abdur Rahman, a Dhaka College student and a focal person of the movement, announced the programme. 

Four platoons of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) personnel were deployed in the Nilkhet area in the early hours of Monday to prevent any untoward situations.
