Police charge batons, sound grenades at protesting teachers

Police have charged batons, lobbed sound grenades, and used water canons on a gathering of protesting teachers at the capital's Shahbagh on Monday. 

A number of teachers who are aspirants or referred to be registered with the Non-Government Teachers Registration and Certification Authority (NTRCA) blocked the Shahbagh intersection at around 1:20pm, halting traffic. Police arrived there and dispersed them at around 1:45pm. 

Convener of the protesters GM Yasin said nearly 12-13 thousand teachers have faced discrimination. Many teachers did not get referred despite passing the examination multiple times. However, some people were appointed without even applying. 

Previously, the High Court cancelled the process of recruiting 6,531 candidates as assistant teachers at government primary schools in Dhaka and Chattogram divisions.
