MOFA holds events marking International Mother Language Day

Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Friday organized a set of events marking the Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language (IML) Day 2025 to pay tribute to the heroic language martyrs and language movement veterans. 

The event featured Provat Pheri (morning procession), discussion, cultural programme and display of the artworks of the children.

Diplomatic Missions, Representatives of UN agencies, and international organizations in Dhaka attended the programme held at the Foreign Service Academy.

At the discussion, the Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin said, ‘Amar Ekushe February’ (Immortal Feb 21) is a historic and significant milestone in the national history.

The spirit of the 21st February has later inspired everybody for the movements to achieve the right to self-determination and it was finally culminated in by achieving the Independence in 1971, he said.

This year marks the silver jubilee celebration of the International Mother Language Day.

The Foreign Secretary conveyed their gratitude to all individuals and entities at home and abroad who contributed to the global recognition of this day as the ‘International Mother Language Day’ back in 1999.

The theme selected for International Mother Language Day this year is: “Make languages count for sustainable development”. 

The foreign secretary said the July-August 2024 revolution and the supreme sacrifices of the young people have provided a unique opportunity to establish equality and justice and to eliminate all forms of discrimination including cultural exploitation.

The current interim government led by Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus is emphasizing promoting multilingualism, preserving endangered languages, and creating an environment where linguistic diversity is ensured, he said.
