Fire breaks out in Nayapaltan's Zaman Tower, under control after 2hrs

A fire which broke out in the Zaman Tower of Nayapaltan in the capital on Wednesday morning was brought under control after two hours, Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) Headquarters Media Cell Official Anwarul Islam Dolon confirmed. 

The FSCD received information about the fire at 5:35am. Considering the high risk, 14 firefighting units were sent to the spot. Among them, nine units were working to control the fire while the rest were on standby. The fire was brought under control at 7:35am. Firefighters are now working to douse the fire fully, he said. 

According to FSCD Dhaka Deputy Director Md Saleh Uddin, the fire originated from a restaurant on the sixth floor of the building. The building was equipped with fire safety measures, but they did not work properly. 

Due to the lack of ventilation, fire and smoke spread to the seventh, eighth, ninth, and tenth floors. There were no casualties in the fire, but two people were rescued alive from the tenth floor, he added.
