Fire breaks out on Mohua commuter train at Satkhamair, Gazipur

A fire broke out on a Netrokona-Mohanganj bound Mohua commuter train in Satkhamair area under Sreepur upazila of Gazipur on Thursday morning. 

Rail communication between Dhaka and Mymensingh division has been suspended following the incident.

The train was stopped near Satkhamair station when the fire broke out while it was moving, said Abul Khair, Joydebpur railway station master in Gazipur.

He said, “Mohua commuter train left Dhaka for Netrokona-Mohanganj in the morning. The train passed Joydebpur railway station around 9:30 am and passed Sreepur railway station on the Dhaka-Mymensingh rail route. When it approached Satkhamair station after passing through Sreepur railway station, the train's power car caught fire.”

“As Satkhamair station is closed, there is no immediate communication system there. The matter has been reported to Dhaka. Currently, rail communication between Dhaka and Mymensingh division has been kept suspended,” he added.

Train passenger Md. Ismail Hossain said, “After leaving Sreepur, when the train reached near Satkhamair railway station, a fire was suddenly seen in the last coach of the train. The fire spread very quickly. Later, the last coach was separated from the main train and kept away with the efforts of engineers.”

Firefighter Rezaul Karim, on duty at Sreepur Fire Service, said that after receiving the news of the fire in the train, two units went to the spot and are working to douse the fire. 

There were no immediate reports of casualties, he added.
