Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET) students have withdrawn their hunger strike.
Professor Mohammad Tanzimuddin Khan, a member of the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC), fed students drinks to break their strike at around 1am on Thursday. The protesting students then went back to their respective halls.
In response to recent unrest at Khulna University of Engineering and Technology (KUET), the government earlier initiated the process of relieving the Vice-Chancellor (VC) and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of their duties to resolve the ongoing crisis and ensure the swift resumption of academic activities.
A total of 32 students from KUET started an indefinite hunger strike on the balcony of the Student Welfare Centre at 4 pm on Monday, to demand the removal of Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Masud.
The students claimed that leader-activists of Chhatra Dal and outsiders attacked students on February 18, but the KUET administration was unable to provide safety to the students. Police filed a case without mentioning any names and no one has been arrested yet.
They added that an outsider had filed a case against 22 students. The KUET authority suspended 37 students. Despite appealing to the VC many times, he did not meet the students' demands.
