Reform most important agenda for interim govt: CA

Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Adviser to Bangladesh’s interim government, recently told Al Jazeera that the reform agenda is the most important agenda for the interim government. 

In the interview titled, "Muhammad Yunus: Real reform or just a new ruling class in Bangladesh?," the CA spoke to Al Jazeera's Neave Barker, where he addressed the nation’s precarious journey towards reform.

With increasing concerns about the legitimacy of the democratic process, Dr Yunus emphasized the importance of meaningful change rather than merely swapping one elite for another.

As Bangladesh navigates its transition, questions loom over the interim government’s commitment to democracy and its ability to dismantle entrenched power structures.

Dr Yunus acknowledged the challenges ahead, stating that true reform requires not just political change but also a shift in the socio-economic landscape.

Critics argue that without significant accountability measures, the interim government might inadvertently reinforce a new ruling class, perpetuating the cycles of corruption and exclusion.

Muhammad Yunus, however, remains optimistic, calling for active citizen engagement and transparency to ensure that the promises of reform translate into reality.

The interview also tackled issues such as the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina's stay in India, the Rohingya crisis, as well as the looming trade crisis after the US imposed high tariffs on imports.
