Editors Council condemns mass legal actions against journalists

Mahfuz Anam, President of the Editors Council and Editor of The Daily Star, said that the filing of numerous cases against journalists undermines independent journalism and instills fear. 

He was speaking at a discussion organised by the Editors Council at the National Press Club in the capital to mark World Press Freedom Day.

He highlighted the dire situation: "Currently, 266 journalists face legal cases related to murder or violence. How can this be justified?"

Mahfuz Anam criticised the oppressive media environment under the previous regime, citing the misuse of the Digital Security Act and other laws. 

He noted that in addition to the 200 journalists previously were sued under the Digital Security Act, 266 now face accusations of serious crimes. 

"This is a disgrace," he stated, urging the government to act responsibly. 

"If a journalist has committed a crime, file a proper case and ensure punishment. We will not defend those guilty of crimes against society or the July-August movement. However, these cases have lingered for six to seven months with no progress in investigations."

Addressing the government's stance that individuals have the right to file cases, Anam questioned, "If laws are being misused, will the government do nothing?" 

He pointed to the plight of 13 arrested journalists, detained for seven to eight months without bail or trial, and demanded accountability. 

"If these journalists are guilty, they must face trial. But leaving them in limbo without legal proceedings is unacceptable," he said.

Proposing a solution, Mahfuz Anam suggested the government review a sample of 10-15 cases involving journalists among multiple accused. "If even a few cases are found to be baseless, why not take action? 

The inaction emboldens those harassing journalists," he said, condemning the situation and calling for government support for journalists. 

The discussion was moderated by the Editors Council's General Secretary and Editor of Dainik Banik Barta.

Mahmudur Rahman Manna of Nagorik Oikya, Jonayed Saki of Gana Sanghati Andolan, and Nahid Islam of Jatiya Nagorik Party also spoke on the occasion.
