54 detained over attack on NCP leader Hasnat Abdullah

Police have detained 54 people over an attack on Hasnat Abdullah, NCP’s Chief Organiser (Southern region). All the detainees are leaders and activists of the Awami League. They were detained between Sunday night and Monday morning. No case was filed in this incident till Monday morning, police have said. 

Confirming the matter, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner Robiul Hasan said several police teams started drives to detain those involved in the attack on Hasnat Abdullah's car on Sunday morning. 

The incident took place at around 7:00 pm at the Chandna intersection area on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway while Hasnat was travelling to Dhaka by vehicle. The vehicle was vandalised and Hasnat sustained injuries to his arm during the attack. 

The incident was disclosed in the evening through a Facebook post from Sarjis Alam, NCP Chief Coordinator (Northern Region).

“After the incident, Hasnat Abdullah's vehicle headed towards Dhaka. As it reached the Board Bazar area near the Islamic University of Technology (IUT), students from the university came forward to ensure his safety,” NCP Chief Organiser (Northern Region) Sarjis Alam told BSS.  

Hasnat Abdullah got out of the car there and spoke with the students. Gazipur Metropolitan Police officials also arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, he added.
