No 'genocide' occurred during July-August, it was 'crimes against humanity': Chief prosecutor

Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal Advocate Tajul Islam said the atrocities that occurred in Bangladesh during the July-August mass uprising last year do not fall under the definition of 'genocide.'

The investigation agency of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) on Monday submitted an investigation report to the prosecution against ousted former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and two others in a case over charges of mass killing, murder and crimes against humanity in July-August.

Five charges were brought against Sheikh Hasina by the investigation agency. The other two named in the case were former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former Police IG Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun. 

Tajul said the charges do not include genocide. 

"According to the international definition, the crimes committed in Bangladesh are crimes against humanity! Not genocide. The type of crime committed in Bangladesh is mass killing or massacre; not genocide," Tajul said while talking to journalists after receiving the report on Monday.
