Attack on National University VC over autopass demand

An attack has been carried out on the Vice Chancellor of the National University over autopass demand. 

The incident took place in front of the administrative building of the university's main campus in Gazipur around 12 noon on Wednesday.

According to eyewitnesses, when the Vice Chancellor was getting out of his car, a section of the 2022 undergraduate (PASS) examinees surrounded him and started shouting slogans demanding autopass. 

At that time, suddenly some miscreants from the crowd tried to attack him and he was injured, said the sources.

Even after trying to contact him over phone, The Daily Samakal could not reach Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. ASM Amanullah.

According to university sources, the 2022 undergraduate (PASS) students had been protesting for the past few months demanding autopass, alleging that they were not getting regular classroom lessons and exam preparation opportunities due to the Corona pandemic and ongoing political unrest. 

However, the university administration rejected the demand for autopass and organised regular exams, in which about 69 percent of the students passed.

Later, they were given grace marks and an opportunity to re-evaluate their exam papers, the results of which are expected to be published this month.

The university authorities alleged that a group, instigated by some unsuccessful students and external instigators, started a new movement demanding autopasses, and today's attack is part of it.

It was also reported that work is underway to analyse CCTV footage to identify the attackers.

The acting director of the university's public relations department said no autopasses will be allowed. 

Preparations are underway to file a case in connection with the attack on the VC, the PRO office added.
