Chief Adviser frustrated, plans resignation

Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus has expressed utmost disappointment with the country's current state.

Citing obstructions from various groups and lack of cooperation from political parties as major hurdles for his government, he questioned the necessity of playing role as Chief Adviser.

On Thursday, following a scheduled advisory council meeting at the chief adviser’s Tejgaon office, an impromptu discussion on the national situation took place.

Originally set for 11 am, the meeting was moved up by an hour the previous night.

Sources told The Daily Samakal that after a one-hour regular session, secretaries left, and Dr. Yunus held a four-hour unscheduled meeting with advisers.

Two advisers said that Dr. Yunus expressed frustration over the lack of promised cooperation from political parties, making it impossible to fulfill his responsibilities.

He highlighted mounting pressure for elections, doubting the feasibility of a fair vote and rejecting responsibility for a controlled election.

By afternoon, rumors of Dr. Yunus’s potential resignation spread. At 4 pm, BNP held a press conference demanding an election roadmap, warning of limited cooperation without polls roadmap. At 5 pm, Jamaat-e-Islami urged Dr. Yunus to convene an all-party meeting. Later, NCP leaders met him, urging him not to resign.

Meanwhile, the ongoing campaign to swear in BNP’s Ishraque Hossain as Dhaka South City Corporation mayor has demanded the resignation of advisers Mahfuz Alam and Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan.

BNP also called for the dismissal of these advisors and National Security Adviser Khalilur Rahman at a press conference.

Later, a senior NCP leader threatened to demand the resignation of three interim government advisors—Law Adviser Professor Asif Nazrul, Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed, and Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud—labeling them “BNP spokespeople” if reform recommendations are ignored.

Political leaders told The Daily Samakal that impatience from BNP and NCP, coupled with the government’s failure to leverage broader support, has deepened the crisis.

Some advisers are questioning their roles, and the government’s inaction on key incidents, while focusing on issues like corridors and ports, has intensified the situation.
