Ex-state minister Shamsul Alam lands in jail

A Dhaka court ordered former State Minister for Planning Dr. Shamsul Alam to be jailed in connection with the murder case of Juba Dal leader Shamim. 

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque issued the order on Thursday after police presented the former state minister in court, requesting his detention until the investigation is complete.

The Detective Branch arrested Dr. Shamsul Alam in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur area at 12:30 am on Thursday. He faces multiple accusations related to the July mass uprising.

Case documents state that the incident occurred on October 28, 2023, during a BNP grand rally in Dhaka, coincided with a counter-rally by the Awami League (AL) aimed at disrupting BNP’s event. 

Clashes erupted in Naya Paltan, where AL activists, allegedly backed by police, attacked BNP’s rally, resulting in the death of Juba Dal leader Shamim at the scene.

The case was filed with Paltan Police Station in Dhaka on September 24, 2024.
