Former CEC Kazi Habibul Awal arrested

Detective Branch (DB) of police has arrested former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal from the capital's Moghbazar area.

His arrest came two days after the detention of another former CEC, KM Nurul Huda.

Awal was arrested in a case filed against them and 22 others for alleged manipulation of national elections.

Kazi Habibul Awal was arrested around 2pm, Deputy Commissioner of DB (Media and Public Relations) Muhammad Talebur Rahman told media.

He was taken to the DB office on Minto Road, he added.

BNP national executive committee member Md Salah Uddin Khan filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station on Sunday against 24 individuals, including ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and three former CECs, for manipulating the national elections in 2014, 2018 and 2024.

Former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, four former Inspectors General of Police (IGP), several former Election Commissioners and former chiefs of Special Branch (SB), National Security Intelligence (NSI) and Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI) were accused in the case.
