Adequate security measures taken over holy Ashura: DMP

Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) and Acting DMP Commissioner Md Sarwar said Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has taken extensive security measures to ensure the safety of the Shia community's Tazia procession and other events in Dhaka during the holy Ashura.

He shared these details with reporters after inspecting security arrangements at the Hussaini Dalan Imambara in Old Dhaka on Thursday morning. 

Shia community leaders were present at that time.

Acting Commissioner Sarwar stated that the holy Ashura will be observed on July 6 (10th Muharram). 

Both Shia and many Sunni communities are participating in mourning programs from June 27 to July 6. 

Comprehensive police security has been deployed at key locations, including Hussaini Dalan Imambara, Bara Katra, Mohammadpur Bihari Camp, Shia Mosque, Bibika Rowza, and Mirpur Pallabi Bihari Camp, where Ashura is commemorated with religious fervour.

He added that major Imambaras will be monitored by CCTV cameras, and specialised DMP units will be on standby to handle any untoward incidents.

The largest Tazia procession is scheduled to begin at 10 am on July 6 from Hossaini Dalan Gate No. 1, proceeding through Bakshi Bazar Lane, Lalbagh Chowrasta Mor, Shaheed Mazar Road, Ethimkhana Mor, Azimpur Chowrasta, Nilkhet Mor, Mirpur Road, Dhaka College, Science Laboratory, Dhanmondi Residential Area, BGB Gate No. 4, and Sat Masjid Road, before concluding at Dhanmondi Lake Karbala. 

To minimise traffic disruptions, the public is requested to use alternative routes during the processions.

In a separate press briefing, Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) SN Md Nazrul Islam provided historical context for the 10th of Muharram and urged everyone to comply with police instructions.
