Economist Abul Barkat sent to jail

A court has sent economist Prof Abul Barkat to jail in connection with a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Jewel Rana's court gave the order after a hearing on Friday afternoon. 

The economist was arrested at his residence on Road No. 3 in Dhanmondi around 11:30pm on Thursday.

The ACC on February 20 filed a case against 23 individuals, including former Bangladesh Bank governor Dr Atiur Rahman and former Janata Bank chairman Abul Barkat, on charges of embezzling Taka 297 crore.
