Gopalganj Violence: 6,000 accused in four murder cases

Four murder cases have been filed following deadly clashes during a National Citizens' Party (NCP) rally and March in Gopalganj on July 16, 2025. 

The violence, involving supporters of the banned Awami League and law enforcement, resulted in four deaths on the day of the incident, with a fifth death reported later during treatment. 

A fifth murder case is expected to be filed soon.

Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mir Mohammad Sajedur Rahman confirmed that the cases were lodged early on July 20, 2025. 

Each case names 1,400 to 1,500 unidentified individuals, allegedly linked to the banned Awami League and its affiliates, totalling approximately 6,000 accused.

Filed by SI Md Ayub Hossain, this case concerns the death of 17-year-old Ramzan Kazi. After the NCP rally, as leaders left Gopalganj town in a motorcade, armed attackers, reportedly from the Awami League, attacked near SK Salehia Madrasa. When police and army intervened, the assailants fired, critically injuring Ramzan, who was declared dead at Gopalganj General Hospital.

SI Md Shamim Hossain filed a case over the killing of 27-year-old Dipta Saha. During efforts to quell the unrest near Milan Pharmacy by College Mosque, attackers fired on security forces, fatally shooting Dipta, who later died from his injuries.

SI Abul Kalam Azad filed a case regarding the death of 30-year-old Sohel Rana Molla. Attackers targeted NCP leaders near Hotel Raj at the launch terminal area, firing on police and army personnel. Sohel was shot and succumbed to his injuries in hospital.

SI Sheikh Mizanur Rahman lodged a case over the death of 17-year-old Iman Talukdar. Gunmen, allegedly targeting the NCP convoy near the old Sonali Bank branch, opened fire when security forces intervened, fatally injuring Iman, who died shortly after reaching the hospital.
