Depression over Bay of Bengal, signal 3 raised

A low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal has intensified into a depression. As a result, gusty or squally weather may affect the maritime ports, the North Bay, and adjoining coastal areas. 

According to a special weather bulletin issued Friday (July 25), maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Mongla, and Payra were advised to keep hoisted local cautionary signal no. three (R) three. 

Due to the influence of the new moon phase and the depression, the low-lying areas of coastal districts of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jhalokathi, Pirozpur, Barishal, Borguna, Patuakhali, Bhola, Chandpur, Laxmipur, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, as well as the offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by a wind-driven surge of 1-3 feet height above normal astronomical tide. 

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay have been advised to take shelter immediately and remain there until further notice. 

In a separate inland riverport warning, the BMD said rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary south or south-easterly gusty or squally wind speed of 45-60kph is likely to occur over the regions of Faridpur, Jashore, Kushtia, Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Cumilla, Chattogram, and Cox's Bazar, wherein riverports shall hoist cautionary signal no. one (R) one. 

The depression may also cause heavy (44-88mm/24 hrs) to very heavy (>88mm/24 hrs) rainfall at many places over Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram divisions. 

Due to the rainfall, landslides may occur in places over the hilly districts of Chattogram, Rangamati, Bandarban, Khagrachari, and Cox's Bazar.

Besides, temporary waterlogging may occur in places over Khulna, Barishal, and Chattogram metropolitan areas.
