Political parties agree on 10-year prime ministerial term limit

Professor Ali Riaz, vice-chairman of the National Consensus Commission said all political parties in Bangladesh have reached a consensus that no individual can serve as prime minister for more than 10 years in their lifetime. 

Additionally, they have agreed to establish an Independent Police Commission to enhance the professionalism, accountability, and public-friendliness of the Bangladesh Police.

During the 19th day of the second phase of dialogue held on Sunday at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital, Ali Riaz announced that the 10-year term limit for the prime minister would be included in the July charter. 

He also confirmed the agreement on forming the Independent Police Commission. Further discussions are needed to finalise its legal framework and formation process, he added.

Salahuddin Ahmed, a BNP standing committee member, said that no individual should hold the prime minister’s office for more than 10 years. 

He stated that provisions for appointing the Election Commission would be incorporated into the constitution based on the consensus of the dialogue. 

However, he noted that the BNP would not accept an appointment committee for constitutional and statutory institutions.
