Police recover Tk2.25 crore in Cheques from Riyad's residence

Dhaka Metropolitan Police recovered cheques worth Tk2.25 crore from the home of Abdur Razzak bin Sulaiman, alias Riyad, a former senior coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement in Dhaka and a member of the Central Sports Cell, who was arrested in an extortion case. 

Deputy Police Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed the recovery on Wednesday.

During a raid on Monday night at Riyad’s Nakhalpara residence, police seized four cheques totalling Tk 2.25 crore and FDR documents worth approximately Tk 20 lakh. 

The operation followed Riyad’s arrest in connection with an extortion case.

The case stems from an incident where five individuals, including Riyad, allegedly posed as coordinators and demanded Tk50 lakh from the husband of former MP Shammi Ahmed, who holds a reserved women's seat and is currently absconding. 

The group had previously collected Tk 10 lakh and later returned to demand gold ornaments. 

Alerted by the household, police arrested the five suspects, who were then taken to Gulshan Police Station. Shammi Ahmed’s husband, Siddiq Abu Zafar, filed a case against six individuals for extortion. 

Following a hearing, Dhaka’s Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md. Ziadur Rahman granted a seven-day remand for the accused, against the police’s request for a 10-day remand.
