India yet to respond positively on Sheikh Hasina's extradition: Foreign Affairs Adviser

Bangladesh has formally requested India to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, but Delhi has not provided a positive response, according to Foreign Affairs Adviser Md. Touhid Hossain. 

Speaking to reporters at the Foreign Service Academy on Monday afternoon, he addressed the issue.

When asked about efforts to bring Sheikh Hasina back for trial, Touhid Hossain stated, "There is no new development on this matter. Bangladesh has requested India to return Sheikh Hasina to face trial, but we have not received a positive response. We are still waiting." 

He added, "The trial process for Sheikh Hasina has already begun. Whether she returns or not, the trial will proceed." 

On the question of seeking international cooperation, Hossain remarked, "The government may seek cooperation if necessary, but I see no need for it at this time."

Regarding India’s 'push-in' policy, Touhid Hossain clarified, "There is no formal policy on push-in. If a Bangladeshi is illegally residing in India, they can be detained, and India should inform us. After verifying citizenship, Bangladesh will facilitate their return. Push-in bypasses this process, and we have raised objections to it." 

He further noted, "We’ve informed India that we’ve processed and repatriated individuals based on their lists. Despite this, India continues push-ins, which is unfortunate. We are protesting this practice." 

When asked about Bangladesh’s next steps, the adviser said, "We will not escalate this into a conflict. The only approach is diplomatic dialogue, which we are pursuing. While we haven’t succeeded yet, we remain hopeful for a resolution."
