Army chief pledges support for free and fair elections

Army Chief General Waker-uz-Zaman reiterated the military’s commitment to assisting the government in conducting free, fair, and transparent elections. 

Speaking at the 'Officers' Address' programme in Dhaka Cantonment on Tuesday morning, he addressed both in-person and virtual attendees, including high-ranking officers from various army establishments.

"The nation is moving toward elections, and the army is fully prepared to support the government in ensuring a fair electoral process," General Waker said.

He said that soldiers have been deployed in the field for an extended period, longer than usual, and put stress on the importance of maintaining good relations with all stakeholders to bridge any gaps.

Highlighting the army’s role, he said, "The people of Bangladesh are watching us. You are the future of this nation, and we must act with patriotism while preserving the army’s chain of command." 

Responding to criticisms directed at the Bangladesh Army, he remarked, "There’s no need to be upset by these comments. They come from young people, like our own children. In time, they will recognise their mistakes and feel remorse."

General Waker underscored the army’s professionalism, urging soldiers to perform their duties without engaging in vindictive actions. 

Addressing allegations of political involvement by an army member, he said, "The matter is under investigation. If proven true, action will be taken. No army personnel can participate in political activities." 

He also confirmed that an investigation is ongoing regarding allegations of torture against another officer, stressing that no one will be spared in cases of moral misconduct, but judgments will not be based on media trials alone.

The Army Chief cautioned senior officers, noting, "The state invests heavily in developing army officers. We must ensure they do not engage in criminal activities, as their dismissal would be a waste of state resources."
