Engineering students block Shahbagh with 3 key demands

Students from engineering faculties of various universities, including Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), blocked the Shahbagh intersection around 3:30 pm on Tuesday to press for three demands. 

The protest also condemned death threats against former BUET student Engineer Rokonuzzaman Rokon.

The students had announced their 'Blockade of Engineers' programme on Monday and issued a notice. 

As planned, they blocked Shahbagh, halting traffic and causing congestion in the area and its surroundings.

Their demands include legal action against those who attacked and threatened BUET student Rokon and the establishment of a commission to implement three-point reforms in the engineering sector. 

The specific demands are:

1. Abolish the 33 percent quota for diploma engineers in ninth-grade positions and base appointments on merit.

2. Eliminate the 100 percent quota for diploma engineers in tenth-grade positions, opening them to all candidates.

3. Restrict the use of the "Engineer" title to those without a B.Sc degree, with legal action against unauthorised use.
