EC removes GD requirement for lost NID

The Election Commission (EC) has removed the requirement to file a General Diary (GD) for lost National Identity Cards (NIDs) to ease the burden on citizens. 

This decision, finalised by the constitutional body, aims to further reduce public inconvenience.

On Thursday, ASM Humayun Kabir, Director General of the EC’s National Identity Registration Division, confirmed the change to The Daily Samakal. 

He added, “We are also planning ways to simplify NID services further.”

Over the past year, the EC has cleared approximately 9.5 lakh pending NID correction applications. 

According to the latest voter list, the country has 12.63 crore voters, including 6.41 crore male voters, 6.22 crore female voters, and 1,230 Hijra voters.
