Former additional IGP Shamsuddoha arrested in Nawabganj

Dr. Khandaker Shamsuddoha, former Additional Inspector General of Police (IGP), was arrested on Sunday at 11:00 am from his residence in Panalia Wanderala Green Park of Nawabganj in Dhaka. 

According to police sources, the arrest followed a disturbance reported on Saturday night when Shamsuddoha, allegedly intoxicated, threatened his housekeepers, including four women, and withheld their salaries. 

One of the maids contacted emergency services (999) at 11:00 pm, prompting a response from Nawabganj Police Station, led by Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mominul Islam.

Police sources revealed that Shamsuddoha threatened the housekeepers with a licensed firearm and later locked himself in his room upon the police's arrival. 

Despite efforts to negotiate, he refused to open the door, leading police to maintain a presence overnight. 

Multiple police teams worked through the night, and he was apprehended on Sunday morning at around 11 am. 

He was subsequently presented before a Dhaka court, and his licensed pistol was seized by Nawabganj Police Station.

Shamsuddoha joined the police force in 1986 as an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and rose to the rank of Additional IGP in 2011. 

That same year, he was appointed chairman of the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) on deputation. 

His tenure at BIWTA was marred by allegations of irregularities, corruption, and arbitrary conduct, leading to his removal in 2015. 

He retired from the police force on March 3, 2016.

OC Mominul Islam confirmed that Shamsuddoha’s arrest was executed after a prolonged wait due to his refusal to open his room’s door. 

Dhaka District Police Superintendent Md. Anisuzzaman stated that Shamsuddoha faced arrest warrants in two cases registered at Nawabganj Police Station. 

He was formally arrested in connection with these cases and sent to court.
